5 Beauty Uses for Bicarbonate of Soda

My new go to beauty product is cheap, environmentally friendly and completely natural, plus it can be used 5 Beauty uses for Bicarbonate of Sodafor so many things.  You may find Bicarbonate of soda / Baking Soda in your pantry but did you know that it can be an excellent addition to your beauty regime.

So here are my top 5 Beauty Uses for Bicarbonate of Soda

1.    Removing old spray tan

This is my preferred way to remove an old spray tan because it works so amazingly well.  Add 500g or thereabouts in to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes, then scrub away with an exfoliating mitt.  It will also leave your skin super soft.

Do not do this the day you are due to have a spray tan as it may leave a barrier on the skin and your new spray tan may not develop properly, the day before is best.

2.    Whiten teeth

My Nan used to clean her teeth with bicarb of soda and she was also the only one of my grandparents who did not have false teeth!  Anyway, use as a paste and gently brush your teeth to whiten your smile.

Do this every other day for a week or so and you will notice a difference.

3.    An excellent exfoliator

Make a paste with a little water and bicarb and use it to gently exfoliate your skin.  It’s also gentle enough to use on your face and wont strip the oils from your skin.

This is also a great way to remove any old spray tan in the shower if you don’t have time to have a bath.

4.    Hair rinse

Bicarbonate of soda does an awesome job of removing excess product build up in your hair.  You can add around a teaspoon to your shampoo bottle or dissolve a teaspoon in water and saturate your hair with it then rinse off.

5.    Fantastic cleaner for make up brushes5 Beauty Uses for Bicarbonate of Soda / Baking Soda

Cleaning my makeup brushes is not on one my favourite jobs but a necessity to avoid skin irritation from any nasties that may be hiding in them.  Cleaning your brushes at least every month will prevent the spread of bacteria.

Collect all your brushes and fill a small bowl with lukewarm water.  Dissolve 1 teaspoon of bicarb in the water and wash each brush until the water no longer appears dirty (you may need to change the water a few times depending on how many brushes you have). Rinse each brush thoroughly and let them dry… and you’re done… well until next month anyway!

I love this stuff and from now on its one of my must have products and has a firm place in my beauty routine.

Sun Splash’s Top Tips for Sexy Summer Ready Skin

Sun Splash Spray tan The skin is the largest organ of the body and we need to treat it with tender loving care.

Drink lots of water

Drinking water is seriously underestimated, I swear by it for fabulous skin.  Not only does water have no fat, no calories, no carbs and no sugar (yay!) it also makes up more than 60% of our body mass. It is the main ingredient in all body fluids, including lymph, blood, digestive juices, urine, tears and sweat so it just makes sense to drink it on a daily basis.  As for our skin water provides our biggest organ with buoyancy and elasticity so it needs to stay hydrated from the inside out.

Top tip: Always have a glass of water on the go.  If you are starting to feel hungry drink a glass of water before you eat anything as your body may be tricking you and you may be thirsty not hungry.

Exfoliate at least twice a week

Exfoliating removes dead skin from the upper layers leaving new and younger skin to shine through.  Check out this blog post – “How to Exfoliate without using Chemicals”, for some hints and tips

Top tip: Exfoliate in the morning to wake you up and give your skin a healthy glow.

Remove unwanted hair

For ultra sleek and smooth skin the hair has to come off! Before carrying out any hair removal exfoliate first, this will help to lift any hairs that may’ve ingrown. There are a few ways to remove the hair: shaving, waxing, electrolysis etc. in a salon or DIY, go with whatever suits you the best.  Always perform hair removal 24 hours before having a spray tan, this will ensure your pores are closed for an even application.

Top tip: Hair conditioner is a great alternative to shaving cream.

We drink water to improve our skin from the inside but we also need to keep it hydrated from the outside too. Moisturizers hold water in the outermost layer of skin and they also act as a temporary barrier (which is why you must not apply moisturizer before a spray tan).

Moisturize your whole body after you get out of water to keep the skin from drying out.

Its best to use a moisturizer especially formulated for your skin type, especially on your face.

Top tip: Don’t forget your feet – before getting into bed slather on moisturizer and wake up to super soft feet.

Have a Sun Splash spray tan

Sunburn is not sexy (or safe) and the only way to look sun kissed and sexy the healthy way is to imitate it with a Sun Splash Spray tan.  Remember to exfoliate your whole body before a spray tan. To extend the life of your tan, avoid soaps or body washes containing heaps of chemicals as these will strip your tan, exfoliate gently after day 4 and moisturize at least once a day… twice a day is even better!

Top tip: Use a body wash and moisturizer specially formulated for use with spray tans.

Have a great skincare routine

To keep skin looking youthful you need to follow a daily skin care routine.  I don’t mean just remembering to take your make up off before bed but also, exfoliating, moisturizing and applying sunscreen to your whole body.  Weekly treatments such as facemasks suitable for your skin type should also be included.  Do you need any more of an excuse to book that facial or body treatment!

Top tip: Avoid hot showers; water that is too hot for the skin will dry it out.

Use sun protection

The main cause of wrinkles is damage done by the sun.  The sun dehydrates your skin and damages it through ultraviolet (UV) radiation that penetrates below its top layer. The greatest damage occurs deep in the dermal layer, where elastin and collagen fibers break down quickly…. this leads to loose, sagging, deeply wrinkled, and older-looking skin.

Of course we don’t want to completely stay out of the sun as we need to maintain our vitamin D levels but wearing sunscreen is so very necessary especially for those of us that live in Australia.  Sensible sun protection will not put you at risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Do not be tricked into thinking that a spray tan will protect you against damaging UV radiation.  Apply an oil free sunscreen 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. A sunscreen that is not oil free will strip your spray tan.

Top tip: Slip on a shirt, Slop on the 30+ oil free sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Seek shade or shelter, Slide on some sunnies. – “Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide”. for more information.

Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet can help you feel and look your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and lean proteins. Stay away from processed food and cut down on your sugar intake.  Research suggests that a diet rich in vitamins and minerals from natural sources and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.

Top tip: Replace sugar in your tea or coffee with honey, a natural sugar substitute.

How to exfoliate naturally… without using chemicals

We are all told to exfoliate and especially before a spray tan but why… and how?

Firstly, what is exfoliation?

Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface, and has been used for many years to help maintain skin.

Why exfoliate?

Exfoliation removes the outer layer of dead skin to reveal the newer, younger skin underneath. The average human generates a new layer of skin every two to four weeks so exfoliating the outer layer unclogs pores, keeps skin clean, and helps reduce breakouts.

Exfoliating is especially important before getting a spray tan because it removes the dead skin and leaves an excellent base for the solution. Exfoliating before a spray tan will ensure that your tan ill last longer and fade evenly.  Basically, you are trying to prevent your skin from shedding so if you exfoliate before a spray tan you are effectivily

Exfoliation is also important for both men and women before shaving and other hair removal as it exposes the hair follicles. This allows a better shave and is excellent in helping to remove ingrown hairs that may’ve occurred due to previous hair removal.

Exfoliating can be done either wet, in the shower or dry body brushing…. No, I don’t mean brushing yourself with your ordinary hairbrush but by using a brush that is specifically designed for use on the body. Dry body brushing has many benefits as well as exfoliating the skin. It can improve lymphatic drainage and blood circulation, release toxins and reduce ingrown hairs.

What do we use to exfoliate?

There are a few tools you can use to help you exfoliate – gloves, loofah, body brush preferably made from natural materials.

Exfoliating gloves are my favourite, they look exactly like a pair of gloves but are made from a slightly rough material and they are quick and easy to use while in the shower.

If you want to exfoliate without getting wet first then you should try body brushing before showering.

So, how do we do it?

In the shower – wet

1. Get into the shower and wet thoroughly, pour body wash (remember paraben free) onto your gloves or loofah and massage your skin in circular motions.

2. Using gentle pressure start at your feet and work your way upwards. Avoid exfoliating the sensitive area under your eyes.

Before a shower -dry

When brushing the body start at the ankles and work towards the major lymph nodes. These are located near the neck, the armpits and in the inner thighs. When body brushing, always brush towards these areas finishing towards the heart.

1. Starting on your left side with the soles of your feet use long light strokes working your way up your leg then repeat on your right leg.

2. Then, using circular motions brush your bum from the top of your bum sweeping down then up the side of your hip.

3. Your back is next, work from the bottom to the top. Using a brush with a long handle makes this a bit easier. Otherwise ask a loved one to do it for you.

4. Complete tummy and décolletage (but avoid your boobs) in circular movements working clockwise from the inside out.

5. Finish with your arms working from your hands towards your shoulders. End with a shower.

A great tip – finish your shower with a burst of the coldest water you can handle, this will close pores and leave you feeling refreshed and super clean.

While still damp moisturize your whole body. Of course if you are having a spray tan you would leave this step out.

Some tips to remember:

• When body brushing a slight reddening of the skin (erythema) is normal, it is the blood circulation responding to the skin brushing.

• Because exfoliation removes the top layer of your skin, it makes you more vulnerable to sunburn and sun damage. Wear a sunscreen every time you go outside.

• If pregnant seek doctors advise first before body brushing.

• If you have had a spray tan avoid exfoliating or body brushing for the first few days to prolong the life of your tan.

• Look after your exfoliating tools, rinse thoroughly after use and disinfect body brushes once a week with a natural disinfecting spray.
